Fight on for No 1 jersey as Hamilton sign former Liverpool keeper Fulton

- By ALAN TEMPLE

Hamilton have completed the signing of former Liverpool goalkeeper Ryan Fulton on a two-year deal.

Fulton, 21, didn’t make a topteam appearance but spent 10 years on the books at Anfield.

He impressed during loan stints with Portsmouth and Chesterfield.

Although born in England, Fulton has declared his allegiance to Scotland and boasts three caps at under-21 level.

Fulton will battle Gary Woods, who started Accies’ 3-1 Betfred Cup win over East Kilbride on Saturday, for the number one jersey at New Douglas Park.

Meanwhile, Hamilton stalwart Dougie Imrie insists the club’s only other summer signing, towering defender Xavier Tomas, will strike the fear into forwards all over Scotland.

Martin Canning snapped up the 31-year-old from Swiss outfit Lausanne-sport during the close-season and he has already made a positive impression in the Accies dressing room.

Tomas arrives with a wealth of experience following stints in Greece, Israel and his native France – and, measuring in at a hulking 6ft6ins tall, Imrie has no doubt he will thrive in the rough-and-tumble of Premiership football.

He said: “Xavier is some size of a guy – I think he’s 6ft 6in, so I’m sure a lot of strikers will be very wary of facing a centreback like that!

“In terms of his dressing room presence, Xavier’s a very nice guy and his English is immaculate, so that helps as well. In footballing terms, he’s very much like Lucas Tagliapietro, who we had a couple of years ago.

“He’ll be a big presence in defence, and obviously comes with a huge amount of experience, so I’d be surprised if he takes any real time to settle into Scottish football.” Rangers have been fined by Uefa after fans were found to be guilty of throwing objects on to the pitch during last month’s Europa League first leg against Progres Niederkorn at Ibrox.

The Glasgow outfit lost 2-1 on aggregate to the Luxembourg minnows in the first qualifying round, and have been ordered to pay €7,000 (£6,200) for the behaviour of their fans, who threw paper from the stands.

Rangers have offloaded midfielder Matt Crooks to Northampton for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old joined Rangers last summer, but only played three games.

Pedro Caixinha was given further cause for concern as former Rangers defender Colin Hendry’s son netted the only goal during a closed-doors friendly with St Johnstone.
