‘BBC will have to be careful when it comes to pay structure review’

Welivein a society where a lot of people, more than one might imagine, make remarkable sums of money.

There are footballer­s making £1 million a week, whereas when I was young, footballer­s were paid around £20 a week. At the top of a lot of profession­s, there are huge gulfs which open up between the average person in an organisati­on and the people at the top.

In the broadcast industry generally, it is very competitiv­e and it would not be easy for the BBC to put a cap on pay and retain the best talent. People will not work for the BBC and accept being
