‘No trace’ is found of missing Corrie Mckeague
Corrie Mckeague vanished after a night out in September Police searching a landfill site for missing RAF gunner Corrie Mckeague have said “no trace” of the Fife serviceman has been found.
Suffolk Police Detective Superintendent Katie Elliott said officers sifted through 6,500 tonnes of waste in an “unprecedented” search for the 23-year-old.
She said: “Sadly we have not found Corrie, or any trace of his clothing or mobile phone.”
Mr Mckeague vanished after a night out with friends in Bury St Edmunds on 24 September, 2016. A bin lorry was seen on CCTV near Brentgovel Street in the town around the time Mr Mckeague was last seen, and it took a route which appeared to coincide with the movements of his phone.
Officers started searching the landfill in early March and police said the search has cost more than £1.2 million to date.
Det Supt Katie Elliott said the landfill search for Mr Mckeague had been “systematic, comprehensive and thorough”.
She said Mr Mckeague had been known to sleep in bins after a night out.
“There is no evidence to support any other explanation at this time,” she said.
