Pointless and goalless but Young is encouraged by Fifers’ progress

- By CRAIG P STEWART

East Fife may be low on numbers, but they are going out to grab their first goal and first win under manager Darren Young when Elgin pitch up at Bayview.

Despite their scoring and points blanks, Young is pleased with the progress his men are making.

He said: “We lost 3-0 to a good Hearts side but there was a lot to be positive about.

“They started at a very fast pace and we had to weather a storm but we did that. For the first 20 minutes of the second half we were terrific. We had good openings and should have grabbed a couple of goals.”

Young added: “This game is probably different as we are the favourites. If we can handle that then we can win.”

Ben Gordon is set to miss out after being dismissed at Tynecastle and he joins his injured team-mates Thomas Cordery, Chris Kane, Mark Lamont, Jonathan Page, Kyle Wilkie, Ross Mutch and Kevin Smith on the sidelines.

Elgin manager Jim Weir, pictured, is looking for his men to continue their improvement. He said: “In our first game Dunfermline gave us a comprehensive 6-0 defeat but in the second we only lost 1-0 to Hearts. The players had shown that they had learned and we put in a much improved performance. “We have further improvements to make and we have had some time to work on them as we did not play at the weekend. If we can improve again then we have a chance.” Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson was boosted by seeing his team coming together to celebrate Louis Moult’s goal against Morton after making eight summer signings.

Seven new players featured in the Betfred Cup victory over Morton on Saturday and Robinson was delighted to see his side pressing for the whole game. He said: “We were 4-0 up and we had ten players celebrating the goal. The togetherness in the squad and around the football club is really good.
