Mhairi Black’s position on Europe Remains confusing given her earlier remarks

-

I was astonished to see the comments from Mhairi Black MP, asking Labour voters to back the SNP in keeping us in the single market, by which she means keeping us in the EU (Scotsman, 25 July). Ms Black is on record as saying that she “held her nose” when voting to Remain in June last year, meaning that she is actually a Euro- sceptic, wants out of Europe, and only voted Remain because she had been told to do so, for strategic reasons, by Ms Sturgeon.

Other than Ukip, the SNP is probably the most Euro-sceptic of all the main parties in Scotland. Many of their sup- porters are openly hostile to Europe, and many others couldn’t really care one way or the other. For anyone who does want to stay in the EU, they are not a safe option for lending your support to. They are too leaky a vessel for anyone to be putting much hope in.

I am not a Labour supporter, and that is not my politics, but whatever your views on Jeremy Corbyn, there is no question that the Labour Party are giving people a choice at the moment.

It is the kind of choice that many in Scotland say they want. It is the kind of choice that many Yes supporters say they want, but which is not on offer from the SNP. If Labour supporters want a labour government, they have to support and vote for the Labour Party.

Any other option allows the Conservatives into government. It has always been this way, and always will be. The momentum at the last general election was towards Labour here, despite many people thinking they were not in with a chance. Now that they can see that they are in with a chance, the momentum will continue when the next opportunity arises, and Ms Black will likely be a casualty of that. The left wing socialist in the wrong party will end up on the wrong side of the swing, and she will likely then have the freedom she probably needs in order to define her political position a bit more clearly. VICTOR CLEMENTS Mamies’s Cottage Taybridge Terrace Aberfeldy, Perthshire Mhairi Black SNP MP tells us that it is important to stay in the single market, “to protect working people”. May I objectively enquire which single market she refers to? Presumably she is talking about theeu one, and wishing to stay in it is fair comment. However, her party wishes to take us out of the UK one, which is four times more important to us – which simply does not make any sense! WILLIAM BALLANTINE

Dean Road Bo’ness, West Lothian The SNP’S Mhairi Black accuses Labour of focusing its attacks on the “progressive’’ SNP and not the Tories.

She seems unaware that her own party have been in power in Holyrood for years and with the devolved control they enjoy have had ample opportunity to correct any wrongs. They have chosen not to do so.

Of course, being an SNP MP and working under an enforced party line and eyewatering discipline, she has to say the things she is instructed to say.

But it is frankly quite laughable that she has chosen this line of attack. Ms Black and many other of her fellow Nationalist MPS must be getting extremely worried about the safety of their own seats after the SNP Westminster contingent collapse.
