Brakes put on vehicle scrappage scheme

0 Questions were raised over whether electric and other zero- The UK government has put back promoting a scrappage scheme for the most polluting cars.

In May, ministers outlined plans for some 15,000 diesel and petrol vehicles to be replaced with electric cars, which would be “targeted at those most in need of support and limited in scope”.

However, they have now decided to postpone further considerat­ion until launching a consultati­on in the autumn.

Environmen­t Secretary Michael Gove said previous schemes had been “poor value for money” and noted people are already mov- 0 Michael Gove: ‘Previous schemes were poor value’ ing away from diesel cars.

But he left the door open for local authoritie­s devising schemes, saying he had “no ideologica­l or theologica­l objection” to proposals that were “value for money and appropriat­ely targeted”.
