Head into the past: Ancient Buddha on display among artefacts from Scots in India

A 2,000-year-old Buddhist sculpture goes on display in Edinburgh University’s Main Library from today as part of an exhibition of objects collected by Scots in India.

The stone Buddha head is said to be one of the earliest physical depictions of the ascetic from ancient India.

It shows his enlightened status through a cranial mound, disguised by an elegant top knot, and elongated earlobes.
