Uel Morton, who retired earlier this year after an 11-year stint as chief executive of Quality Meat Scotland is to join Scotbeef Ltd, one of UK’S largest privately owned fresh meat firms, as development director.

Morton, who will join the Bridge of Allan-based company in August, said: “The red meat industry is hugely dynamic and I relish the opportunity to make a contributiontoscotland’sleading red meat processor”.

Robbie Galloway, chief executive of Scotbeef said: “Uel brings a unique skill set to Scotbeef that will enable us not only to develop our opportunities but also help us navigate some of the challenges our industry is going to face in the years ahead.” l While welcoming Scotland’s classification as BSE negligible risk status – which means that the horizon for beef and other red meat exports has been considerably widened – Scotland’s vets have warned of the need for continued surveillance and controls.

British Veterinary Association (BVA) Scottish branch president Melissa Donald said this showed that Scotland was once again leading the way on animal health.

She said: “This status is a just reward for the ongoing efforts of the veterinary profession, farmers, government and industry in the application of BSE controls over the years.”

She said that the BVA had been fully supportive of the efforts, but emphasised the need for the robust following of import tracings and the for surveillance of suspicious cases.
