Featuring Vanessa Redgrave, novelist Patrick Gale’s screenwriting debut tells two love stories, 60 years apart, linked by family, a painting and a long-kept secret.

In the chaos of war in 1944, British Army Captain Michael Berryman (Oliver Jackson-cohen) meets the artist Thomas March (James Mcardle) in Southern Italy. Despite having a fiancée waiting for him back home, straight-laced Michael falls for the bohemian charms of Thomas.

When the war ends they steal some time away at Michael’s secluded cottage, where Thomas paints Michael’s portrait. Michael then returns to his life in London, to marriage and starting a family. Thomas goes back to Soho where, at great personal risk, he can live the life of a gay man.

But can they be satisfied with life after having experienced the connection they had before?

Sprint legend Usain Bolt also lines up on the opening night for the first round of the 100 metres, while Scottish middle distance runner, Laura Muir, starts her bid for double gold with the first heat of the 1,500m (she is also planning on running the 5,000m).

With home videos, unseen footage and exclusive interviews with the people who know them best, Channel 4 uncovers the true story. It’s a tale of creativity versus commerce, innercity deprivation versus suburban aspiration, and it reveals an even bigger story of how race, wealth and celebrity are shaping modern America.

Monday, Channel 4, 10pm Orkney is officially the UK’S cruise ship capital. This year, every cruise line in the world will visit. This programme tells the stories of Orcadians whose lives are impacted by the onslaught of tourists.

For many, it is something to be celebrated – more people means more money coming in. For others, it’s a pain. The capital of Kirkwall can sometimes be so busy that it’s hard to make your way through the main street.

Monday, BBC 1, 7:30pm Based on an existing American scheme, Channel 4 is attempting to fight social isolation among the elderly by bringing together a group of care home residents with a group of pre-schoolers, to prove that this simple act could add years to the elderly people’s lives.

In this first episode of a two-part series, the old and young volunteers will share daily activities designed by experts who will measure and analyse the older group’s physical and mental progress throughout. ■
