Inspiring Danes

- Gilmours Avenue, Blackford

Dr Gerald Edwards envisages “total chaos” in the event of Scottish independence (Letters, 7 August). He assumes Scots would never be able to run an independent economy and all would end in deep disaster. It is kind of him to point out how utterly useless the Scots are, but I wonder how he can explain the strange phenomenon of Denmark.

They are a small country of five million people but with much less natural resource than Scotland. They are bordered to the south by a much larger neighbour and they use their own currency.

A recipe for chaos, according to Dr Edwards. Yet – surprise – the UN index of prosperity puts Denmark at No 2 in the world, (after Norway) and rates Denmark as the most equal and happiest country.

Dr Edwards should note that Denmark is only one of a dozen small North European countries doing remarkably well, and certainly better than Scotland, but that is of no importance to the fervent Unionist.

If he wishes a fine example of chaos he need look no further than Westminster and Brexit.

JAMES DUNCAN, Rattray Grove, Edinburgh What about the arrogance of The Stand & the Fringe Society thinking they have a God-given right to turn St Andrews Square into a burlesque and comedy shanty town for several months of the year? Let it be enjoyed by the citizens!
