Wood lands deal on bumper wind project
Energy services giant Wood Group has landed a contract to carry out power performance testing on Europe’s biggest onshore wind project.
The Aberdeen-based group’s clean energy arm will carry out data monitoring and analysis for the one gigawatt Fosen Vind scheme, being developed in central Norway by a joint venture led by renewable power specialist Statkraft.
The £1 billion project, due for completion by 2020, will see six onshore wind farms totalling 278 turbines built around the Trondheim fjord area. It will have a combined capacity to power up to 170,000 households, more than the total wind power capacity currently installed across Norway.
Robbie Gibson, director of asset management at Wood Group’s clean energy division, said: “We are very pleased to be working with Statkraft on this important project, which is one of the largest of its kind.”
He added: “Power performance testing allows you to compare the actual power curve for a wind turbine to the warranted power curve provided by the wind turbine manufacturer, and to ensure that the manufacturer corrects any sources of underperformance.”
The clean power operation was previously known as Sgurrenergy, headquartered in Glasgow, and specialises in renewable energy and grid integration consultancy. The business has assessed more than 160GW of projects across more than 90 countries.
Wood said last week that it remained “fully committed” to completing its acquisition of rival Amec Foster Wheeler despite competition concerns. 0 Wood’s Robbie Gibson hailed the contract win
