- By SHÂN ROSS

For Susan Heywood opening her exam results was the realisation her dream of studying medicine at the University of St Andrews was coming true.

Susan, 17, a pupil at the independent Albyn School in Aberdeen, got an “A” in all her subjects – Advanced Higher mathematics, chemistry and biology, as well as in English.

“I was hoping for those results but there was always a small doubt in the back of my mind and didn’t want to count on it. But people around me 0 Susan Heywood says she is pleased with her exam results were telling me I’d be going to St Andrews.”

“I was in the middle of making lunch when the post arrived.

“I was hoping it would be earlier but had read they were dealing with a large volume. I’m really very pleased with my results.

“The fact that my offer to study medicine at St Andrews was conditional meant that I probably worked harder than I would. I knew I wouldn’t be able to do medicine if I didn’t get the results.”

Rather than immediately celebrating her results Susan headed off later in the day to the nursing home where she works as a care assistant, gaining valuable experience for her chosen future career.

In terms of long-term plans, Susan said: “I’d like to be a consultant doctor working in Scotland in the NHS.”
