Call to save free bus pass for over-60s

- By SCOTT MACNAB

The Scottish Government is facing pressure to rule out the prospect of an increase in the age at which Scots get their free bus pass.

Ministers are to consult on the measure this year, with fears they will back raising the current eligibility criteria from 60 as costs rise. Labour says it is committed to protecting the country’s “lifeline” bus services.

“Thesnphasabsolutelyno mandate to make cuts to the bus pass, and any decision to do so would breach the trust of voters,” said Labour transport spokesman Neil Bibby.

“There are now over one million people in Scotland benefitting from the bus pass, which has given older and disabled people the freedom to travel when they choose – many of whom would otherwise be unable to do so.”

Labour today unveiled plans to re-regulate local bus services to all areas that want them and to keep ferry services in public hands.
