Aberdeen Let league take the lead

-

The new-style League Cup and European fixtures have made “Opening Day” less of an event than it was in the past. There is still the obvious excitement but for many it’s the fifth competitive match of the season. New signings have been cheered and opponents jeered by the time the league kicks off and perhaps something has been lost because of that.

The debate about summer football will continue as long as Scottish teams struggle in Europe and fixture lists become congested through bad weather and I doubt the authorities will show the vision during my lifetime that would benefit the game as a whole rather than a select few. There would be something special, though, if each team’s season could start with a good old-fashioned league opener.
