BOXING

Wales’ Nathan Cleverly is to defend his WBA light-heavyweight title against Badou Jack on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather’s fight with Conor Mcgregor in Las Vegas on 26 August. The 30-year-old’s first defence of the title represents a chance for him to succeed against an opponent George Groves and James Degale could not overcome. Jack, of Sweden, in January spoke of his plans to step up from super-middleweight after his dramatic draw with Degale, having already outpointed Groves in 2015.

CRICKET

Derbyshire have been fined £1,500 by the England and Wales Cricket Board’s discipline commission after fielding two ineligible players. Unregistered academy player Callum Brodrick played in the Natwest T20 Blast victory against Worcestershire on 19 July and James Sykes took part in a second XI fixture against Lancashire earlier in the month while he was still registered with Leicestershire. The commission accepted that “these regulation breaches were administrative oversights on the part of the Derbyshire County Cricket Club” and Derbyshire apologised for their error, the ECB announced in a statement. England new boy Mark Stoneman and Dom Bess shone as Somerset and Surrey battled out an inevitable draw on the final day of their Specsavers County Championship clash at Taunton. Stoneman celebrated his England callup for next week’s first Test against West Indies with a top score of 67 while Somerset youngster Bess claimed five for 101 - taking his tally to 35 wickets in just six championship appearances - in a Surrey first-innings total of 345. That was in reply to Somerset’s 436 in a rain-affected match, which included a third-day washout and both sides only managing one innings each. The hosts took 13 points in their fight to avoid relegation, while Surrey collected 11.
