Mcinnes hails ‘brilliant’ debutant May, while Lindsay seeks revenge against Motherwell

Aberdeenbossderekmcinnes is convinced Stevie May will prove a major asset after his lively debut for the Dons.

May made his bow on Saturday in a 2-1 victory against Ross County at the Global Energy Stadium, after joining on a four-year deal from Preston.

The 24-year-old former St Johnstone and Sheffield Wednesday forward lasted until the 84th minute when he was substituted to rapturous applause by the large Aberdeen contingent in the ground.

Mcinnes said: “I thought Stevie May had a brilliant debut, bar scoring. He’ll be disappointed but he’ll get there. He showed exactly what he is going to be for us. He was terrific, either into feet or in behind. His work-rate, too, considering he had not had a lot of competitive football.

“There were a lot of big performances; defensively we got better as the game went on.”

County took the lead in the second minute when Craig Curran headed home a Christopher Routis free-kick from six yards out.

But Aberdeen gradually came into the game and the visitors drew level in the 23rd minute when Mark Reynolds fired home from 15 yards.

The Dons dominated for long spells after the break and Shay Logan headed home a Gary Mackay-steven cross at the back post in the 71st minute for the winner.

However, County almost rescued a point in the dying minutes when substitute Jim O’brien smashed a 25-yard drive off the crossbar.

Jamie Lindsay, County’s onloan signing from Celtic, felt the result could have been different.

He said: “It was a tight game. We are disappointed we haven’t taken anything from it.

“We talked about making a good start before the game and we scored after about two minutes. But when they equalised it killed us for about 20 minutes. We started the second half well and it could have gone either way.”

Looking ahead to County’s next match, away to Motherwell on Saturday, the 21-yearold added: “We will be looking for revenge after the cup defeat to them here the other night.”
