Moving house: Swiss mansion shifted to make way for new neighbour

-

A crowd gathers as work begins to move a 3,600-tonne mansion in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The “Jacob” building was shifted about 20 yards at a pace of up to four yards per hour, a speed which is barely perceptible to the eye. According to local media, a glass of wine was placed on the building’s terrace as part of a bet between the owner and contractor that none would be spilled. The mansion is being moved to create space for a new social institution. It is due to reopen in 2019 as a hospice.
