Nicola Sturgeon will become the first serving First Minister to address a gay pride event this weekend when she attends Glasgow Pride.

The organisers of Glasgow Pride yesterday said they were “delighted” that Ms Sturgeon was to be making an appearance. While the First Minister tweeted that it would be a “privilege” to take part.

Ms Sturgeon is thought to be the first head of government in the UK to make a personal appearance at such an event. Although David Cameron sent a personal message to London Pride via Youtube before he 0 Nicola Sturgeon says it is a privilege to speak at Pride resigned as Prime Minister. Ms Sturgeon has attended Glasgow Pride in the past, but did so in her role as Deputy First Minister and Health Secretary.

Ms Sturgeon tweeted: “It will be a privilege to be the first serving First Minister to speak at Pride. See you on Saturday @Prideglasgow.”

SNP MSP Stewart Mcdonald tweeted: “That will make @Nicolasturgeon the first ever serving First Minister and head of government anywhere in the UK to take part in Pride.”

Ms Sturgeon has made improving equality one of the key ambitions of her government. She has been praised by equality campaigners for its support of gay marriage as well as proposed reforms that would allow adults and children to legally change their gender without medical diagnosis.
