- By MARGARET NEIGHBOUR

Police in Finland said last night that the man in custody after a deadly stabbing attack in the city of Turku is likely to have acted alone but they are not ruling out the involvement of others.

Authorities are also looking for more potential suspects.

Theysaythemanstabbed eight people, killing two of them, before police shot him in the thigh and detained him yesterday. Authorities are trying to determine his identity and nationality.

Officers said last night that it was unclear whether the incident was related to terrorism. Finland’s interior minister said security was being stepped up across the country.

The country’s president, Sauli Niinisto, visited Turku yesterday and condemned what he called a “shocking and cowardly act”. He said officials were doing what they could “so that all Finns are able to feel safe”.

Finnish broadcaster YLE said several people were seen lying on the ground in central Turku.
