Border hypocrisy
In his attempt to link the partition of India and Pakistan with Scottish self government, Brian Brotherston (letters 18 August), seems ignorant of the fact that the settled border between Scotland and England was legally established in 1237. As in India, it was Britain’s infamous history of drawing colonial boundary lines without any consideration for traditional religious or ethnic areas that has sown the seeds of much of the conflict and division in Africa and the Middle East.
In order to prevent the implementation of the Irish Home Rule Bill, it was Edward Carson with his Ulster loyalist paramilitary group that partitioned Ireland and it’s ironic that the UK government is now turning somersaults to ensure a seamless EU border in Ireland when Labour and Tory politicians kept on about the need for border guards at Berwick during the Scottish independence referendum.
