More turbulence for Airdrie despite win

-

Airdrie enjoyed their first league success with a 2-1 win over Lanarkshire neighbours Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill but it did not stop further disruption at the club.

Coach Willie Aitchison, who was only brought in a fortnight ago to replace Mark Wilson who left in June, parted company with the Diamonds minutes after the game which was won by goals from Ryan Tierney either side of a Joao Victoria strike.

A club statement said: “We can confirm that Willie Aitchisonisnolongerinvolved with the club. Progress has been made on other fronts and further updates will be made in due course.”

Ayr United remain top thanks to Paddy Boyle’s winner in their 4-3 success at Stranraer. The Blues led through Ryan Wallace’s goal but Declan Mcdaid’s fine solo goal had the score level by halftime. Craig Moore’s finish and Michael Moffat’s side-foot home turned things around before Ryan Thomson’s quickfire double made it 3-3 with nine minutes left. Then Boyle broke free on the left and sent home a low shot.

Manager Ian Mccall said: “I was disappointed with certain things but it was an exciting game. We made mistakes at their goals but we hit back.”

Raith Rovers beat visitors Forfar 3-1, Liam Buchanan and Greig Spence scoring in the last five minutes. Mark Millar’s free-kick had given the Loons the advantage, with Lewis Vaughan equalising before Forfar’s Jamie Bain was dismissed before the break. Buchanan flicked home to demoralise the ten men before Spence pounced on a Simon Mensing mistake to seal Raith’s success.

East Fife came out on top 3-2 at Arbroath with Chris Duggan’s goal proving decisive. An own goal by Thomas O’brien gave the Fifers the lead but Steven Doris hooked in a leveller. Nathan Flanagan’s strike and Duggan’s tap-in had the visitors in control at the break before Danny Denholm pulled a goal back.

Alloa left Queen’s Park pointless thanks to Adam Martin’s late goal in a 1-0 Indodrill Stadium success.
