Designers help create amputee limb covers

- By ANGUS HOWARTH

Researchers have joined forces with Highland designers to design personalised limb covers for three amputees.

Jeroen Blom, a researcher at the Glasgow School of Art’s Highlands and Islands campus, brought together the designers with three people who have artificial lower limbs.

Karen Collins, from Naturally Useful in Rafford, Scott Gleed from Gleed 3D in Relugas and Roger Milton, from Auldearn Antiques in Auldearn in the Highlands, will codesign personalised prosthetic greaves for them.

Designers attended codesign workshops led by Mr Blom who developed template models for them to use their skills in creating the personalised limb covers.

The artisans collaborated with the amputees on the design and in the making of the greave.

Mr Blom said: “Codesign is an approach that involves the end user fully in the exploration and design of the product or process so as to ensure maximum benefit.

“Through this project three lower limb amputees havebeenabletohaveafull involvement in the creation of something very personal and unique to them and in so doing had a much greater sense of involvement and ownership.”
