Aidan Smith is so right to mourn the loss of local loyalties when a beloved football club decamps out of town (Perspective, 22 August).

Take my home city: Nottingham Forest is a hot pie’s hurling distance from Notts County, England’s oldest league club. Plenty of tradition. But they are separated by the River Trent and a canal.
