The wrong track

by market short-termism? Denied the nobility of disinterest, it is lost. Our councillors can choose to set aside the superstitious demands of the market-cultists and instead represent the city and what it stands for on this occasion. They’ll have plenty of opportunities to sustain the town. (DR) JAMES LAWSON

In early August I wrote to the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh to ask if they knew of any events to mark this centenary and I await a response.

FIONA GARWOOD Ormidale Terrace, Edinburgh While I agree with Keith Mathieson (Letters,23 August) that educating drivers on the basic rules of driving on single track roads on Skye – or indeed, anywhere in the Highlands – is a good idea in theory, it’s a waste of time in practice. Where and when would this education take place? Putting an explanatory sign up might help but I think few would heed it even if they could understand it (many Skye tourists don’t speak English) and also, it would probably have to be cluttered with a Gaelic translation!

Tourists are not interested in anything other than a leisurely tour and they forget that the 10,000 or so locals on Skye have to get a move on as the single track roads are often their only roads, hence a great deal of the overtaking.

The answer is to widen the single track roads but that would probably be financially prohibitive. DOUGLAS S BRUCE

Stonefield Portree, Isle-of-skye church. Should his memorial be removed? Of course not; he was a big man, and reminds us of an important period in our history; we do not have to “approve” of him!

In our fallen world, if we remove all memorials of those who have transgressed in some way, there will be few standing! WILLIAM BALLANTINE
