Partnership aims to score for world’s homeless

-

Travel search site Skyscanner has teamed up with a Scottish sports co-operative to provide 325 footballs for an event to raise awareness about global homelessness.

The Homeless World Cup kicks off next week in Oslo, Norway with 72 teams made up of homeless people from 54 countries taking part.

In the tie-up between Edinburgh-based Skyscanner and Bala Sport of Glasgow, which sources ethically produced Fairtrade sports equipment, footballs made in Pakistan are being supplied to the Homeless World Cup Foundation (HWCF) which organises the tournament.

Bala’s marketing director Angus Coull said: “Fairtrade enables workers to provide a better future for the families, so playing this tournament with Fairtrade balls makes perfect sense and is a real winwin situation for all.”

Through Fairtrade, the workers who make the balls receive fair rates of pay, safe conditions and access to union representation.
