Costa Teguise, Lanzarote

- Robin Mckelvie

Friday, midday

Check into the stylish Barcelo Teguise Beach (doubles from £105, www. barcelo.com). This adults-only four star hotel is in keeping with the ambition of the Lanzarote resort as a whole, which is moving upmarket. For a treat book a room with an outdoor hot tub.

1:30pm

Villa Toledo (www. restaurantevillatoledo.com) is another sign of the new face of Costa Teguise. Creatively cooked tuna and bocinegro (sea bream) star alongside ocean views and the malvasia wines Lanzarote is famed for.

3pm

Lanzarote owes its low rise, designled aesthetic to Cesar Manrique, a visionary entrusted with crafting the island’s modern architecture. The Manrique Foundation (www. cesarmanrique.com) in his old studio home reveals more about the man as well as his fabulous architecture.

8pm

The Barcelo boasts slick public spaces as well as a trio of dining options. The Atlantic offers local meat and fish cooked in front of you and local wines.

Saturday, 9am

The beaches are what first attracted people to Costa Teguise. While away a few hours on the best of them – Cucharas. Or make the effort to wander around to Charcos, which is a little quieter.

1pm

Head to El Golfo for a superb seafood lunch by the ocean. Local fish and grilled Atlantic prawns are the stars at Costa Azul (tel: 928 173199). Handily they do some of the local wines in half bottles.

2:30pm

Lose a few hours exploring the volcanic vineyards of La Geria. You can see vines growing in craters and visit the bodegas. El Grifo (www. elgrifo.com) does great tastings and has an excellent shop too.

8pm

The new Mercado Diecisiete (tel: 928-346226) is the best place to dine in the Manrique- designed Pueblo Marinero, with its open kitchen, superb peppercorn steaks and local wines by the glass.

Sunday, 9am

Choose between relaxing at one of Barcelo’s outdoor pools or savour a treatment in their spa. Their signature treatment is a hot stone massage. ■ Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) fly to Lanzarote from Edinburgh with returns starting from under £100.
