Trump was wrong over sheriff – Ryan
Donald Trump should not have pardoned a former Arizona sheriff who took a hard line on immigrants, the top Republican in Congress said.
Paul Ryan, speaker of the House of Representatives, spoke out after the president pardoned Joe Arpaio, convicted last month of criminal contempt.
Mr Arpaio had defied a court order to stop traffic patrols targeting suspected illegal immigrants.
Mr Ryan’s spokesman said: “The speaker does not agree with the decision. “Law enforcement officials have a special responsibility to respect the rights of everyone in the US.”
