Nazhad and The Bell
First shown at the Venice Biennale in 2015, this two-screen film work by Iraqi artist Hiwa K packs a powerful punch about the global arms trade. He filmed bullets, tanks and mines being melted down in a specialist scrap dealer in Northern Iraq where they are turned into metal ingots. These are being cast by master craftsmen in Italy into a giant bell, a reversal of the traditional process which saw bells being melted down to make cannons. The show, which forms a focus of Hospitalfield’s open weekend on 2 and 3 September, also includes the 2018 Year Planner by Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane, a calendar which marks the dates of both arms fairs and art fairs.
