Really Wild Show presenters back together to save endangered kiwis

- By LAURA HARDING

Former Really Wild Show presenters Michaela Strachan and Chris Packham will reunite for a one-off online show to raise awareness about the endangered kiwi.

The former hosts of the BBC programme will front The Kiwi Wild Show, to draw attention to the plight of the national bird of New Zealand, which has lost 99 per cent of its number in the past 80 years, with just 50,000 remaining in the wild.

As part of the show, Strachan travelled to the country to film with Kiwis for Kiwi, a charity that preserves and protects the species, and to meet its 0 Michaela Strachan said the kiwi could soon become extinct scientists, conservationists and rangers who create safe habitats for the birds.

Strachan said: “It’s very exciting to co-host the Kiwi Wild Show with Chris as it’s an incredible opportunity to highlight the amazing work that the charity Kiwis for Kiwi does to rescue and protect this endangered, quirky, lovable bird.

“It’s a fact that, without help, the kiwi could become extinct in our lifetime.”

Parts of the Kiwi Wild Show will feature Strachan as she follows Operation Nest Egg, a mission to deliver eggs to an incubation centre, where the eggs are protected until they hatch.

The chicks are then put in a creche to grow stronger and, once they reach adult size, they are released back into the wild.

The final part of the show, devised by Old Mout Cider, will be filmed in front of a studio audience in London on 15 September.
