Room to roam on open roads
The Scottish islands of Orkney are best for driving on the open road, according to new figures. The north-eastern coastal area has an average of 49 metres (160ft) of road per person, more than anywhere else in the UK, data from the Department of Transport shows. Motorists in Scotland also enjoy the highest quality of roads, with 80 per cent in good or acceptable conditions. Drivers in south-east England are the most squeezed for space, with the lowest entries all in London.
