Management now the key
As we have said several times, our new Queensferry Crossing is a marvel. Spectacular to look at, it offers faster speeds across the Forth and will virtually never have to close due to high winds.
With this in mind, it’s little wonder that commuters are eager to try the new bridge.
But yesterday – the first day of traffic after the official opening by the Queen – motorists were met with the all-too familiar sight of tailbacks. Yesterday morning traffic was backed up to junction 2 on the M90 and last night it was a similar story as motorists headed north. Higher than average traffic and dreich weather are certainly factors but this was a massive disappointment to many who had hoped for an instant new dawn.
It’s tempting to think that the job was done when the Queen cut the ribbon, but managing traffic flow – and expectations – will be key in the first few weeks. Otherwise drivers may think we have spent £1.35 million to swap tailbacks on one bridge for another.
Communications will be key here, and that’s not always been Transport Scotland’s strongest suit.
