Queens sign Mcfadden on short-term deal

- By CRAIG P STEWART

A decade after being the toast of Scotland for hitting a stunning winner against France in the Parc des Princes, James Mcfadden has found a new club after being recruited by Queen of the South.

The ex-motherwell, Everton, Birmingham City, Sunderland and St Johnstone star was recently sounded out about being the new manager at Airdrie but turned that down to focus on returning as a player with Queens where he has been training since pre-season. A year of barely featuring due to his commitment to Motherwell as their assistant boss left Mcfadden, pictured, short of fitness but two months of work at Queens has paid off with a deal until January agreed with the 34year-old ahead of today’s visit to Livingston.

Boss Gary Naysmith, who played with Mcfadden at Everton, said: “I’m delighted to have James join us. He has come to challenge for a place in the team as he still has a lot to offer. James has been in with us for eight weeks now unpaid and has never missed a training session. After not playing much in the past year he still needs games to be fully ready but we have seen enough to know that he will add value.”

Jim Duffy has told his Morton side they need to do more as an attacking force to beat leaders Dunfermline at Cappielow. Duffy said: “Allan Johnston put together a squad that looked strong on paper and now they are showing they are strong on grass. We have to up our game in the final third to get something.”

Elsewhere, Inverness Caledonian Thistle visit St Mirren, while Dundee United host Dumbarton and Falkirk travel to face Brechin City.
