Still no points or goals for Palace but De Boer defiant

-

The pressure being piled on Crystal Palace boss Frank de Boer intensified yesterday as his side lost 1-0 at Burnley.

Chris Wood seized upon a poor attempt at a back-pass from Lee Chung-yong and fired a fine strike past Wayne Hennessey for the only goal of the game at Turf Moor.

It means Palace have lost all four of their Premier League matches since De Boer took over in the summer – without even scoring a goal.

The visitors created a number of goalscoring opportunities but were unable to finish any of them off, and De Boer said: “I think there was only one team deserving to win, which was us. It is football and sometimes you don’t get what you deserve.

“But we can also blame ourselves, with how we gave the goal away, and not scoring our opportunities.”

If De Boer’s tenure at Palace is cut short in the coming weeks, it will be his second successive failure after lasting just 84 days at Inter Milan last season.

He added: “I am just focusing on what I can control and so are my staff and players. [The future] is for other people to decide but while I’m the manager I will give 100 per cent.”

Newcastle United gave their absent manager Rafa Benitez the perfect pick-me-up with a 1-0 win against Swansea City. Benitez is recovering from an operation and didn’t travel to Wales but his captain, Jamaal Lascelles, headed the winner on 76 minutes after making a goalline clearance at the other end moments earlier.

In tonight’s televised match, West Ham United, still without a point, entertain newly promoted Huddersfield ,who will join Manchester United and Manchester City at the top of the table if they win.
