Legislation to enact Brexit was last night set to clear its first major parliamentary hurdle despite concerns over the sweeping new powers it will give ministers.

MPS were expected to pass the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill in the early hours of this morning, with the government facing demands from all sides for amendments to limit the use of so-called Henry VIII powers and preserve European rights. The SNP’S shadow Europe spokesman Stephen Gethins used the
