Get serious on Brexit, Mcconnell warns
Neither the Scottish or UK governments are taking the impact that Brexit will have on devolution seriously enough, Scotland’s former first minister Jack Mcconnell has warned.
Lord Mcconnell said the UK’S withdrawal from the EU would bring about “the biggest constitutional change in the UK since devolution”, and said the two sides should meet on a monthly basis to resolve a stand-off over post-brexit powers.
He backed Scottish Government calls for powers in devolved areas like agriculture to “automatically” come to the Scottish Parliament, but said ministers at Holyrood should set out how they would be used so compromise can be reached.
Yesterday Theresa May’s 0 Words of warning from Lord Mcconnell deputy warned of a possible trade war between Scotland and England if power over agricultural subsidies was devolved.
Speaking to the Politicshome website, Lord Mcconnell said: “More speeches and stand-offs will not resolve these issues, negotiations and attention to detail will. I urge both government to get on with the job and make it happen.”
