With reference to Marion Brown’s letter of 18 September on antidepres­sants, I, too, read with interest the recent articles on Alzheimer’s disease and lack of neurologic­al services in Scotland.

I consumed a benzodiaze­pine and many different antidepres­sants for 40 years on the advice of my GPS. I have now withdrawn from these drugs, again on medical advice. I am left both cognitivel­y and physically disabled, having suffered neurologic­al damage.

I have spent three-and-ahalf years in bed as a result unable to function normally. I have known since April 2014 the cause of my many symptoms, yet six doctors in Scotland have either denied the role of the drugs or told me they do not know what is wrong with me.

In desperatio­n I consulted a GP in Ireland who had no difficulty recognisin­g my symptoms and their cause. I now have an acknowledg­ement from a local neurologis­t that
