Road warrior /Dolan gets up to finish 27th after horror time trial crash
British cyclist Lauren Dolan celebrated her 18th birthday in a Norwegian hospital yesterday after battling on after a horrific injury to finish 27th in the World Road Championships junior individual time trial.
In rainy conditions in Bergen, Dolan crashed heavily after reportedly hitting a pothole at the mid-way point of the 16.1-kilometre course.
She suffered significant lacerations to her right leg but got back on a replacement bike to post a respectable time. She had been on course for a topten place, according to oncourse timing, before her crash.
Dolan, from Devon, eventually finished only two minutes and 24 seconds on winner Elena Pirrone of Italy. Dolan’s GB team-mate Pfeiffer Georgi, from Gloucestershire finished seventh.
Dolan was taken to hospital in Bergen, where she posted on Twitter yesterday: “I would just like to say a huge thank you to all the staff @Britishcycling, nurses and surgeons at Bergen hospital for fixing my wounds and to everyone for all your kind well wishes. I can’t thank you enough. I’m recovering well from surgery in hospital so should be home soon!”
