Taylor-made City send Stoke crashing out
Matt Taylor made one goal andscoredtheotherasbristol City dumped Stoke out of the Carabao Cup with a deserved 2-0 victory at Ashton Gate.
The hosts took a 50thminute lead when Taylor, pictured, ran onto an Aden Flint header. His low shot came back off a post but Famara Diedhiou was on hand to net the rebound.
The same two players combined again 10 minutes later, Taylor racing onto Diedhiou’s flick-on and firing low past Lee Grant with his left foot.
It took some fine Grant saves to prevent a heavier defeat for the Premier League side, who were second best for most of the game.
Patrick Bamford guided Middlesbrough into the fourth round with two second-half goals to earn a 2-0 away win over 10-man Aston Villa.
The former Chelsea and Nottingham Forest striker proved a troublesome opponent for Villa’s skipper Tommy Elphick, who was sent off in the 58th minute for a foul on Bamford, also giving away a penalty.
Bamford converted the spot-kick and sealed Villa’s fate nine minutes later with another goal to produce Boro’s first League Cup win over the Midlands club in five encounters.
Marko Arnautovic marked his home debut for West Ham by orchestrating a 3-0 victory over Bolton at London Stadium.
The Austrian playmaker was sent off against Southampton last month in only his second appearance for the club, incurring a threematch ban and the wrath of boss Slaven Bilic despite subsequently making a series of apologies to team-mates, fans and his manager. For fans in east London it was worth the wait as he directed play against Bolton, expertly setting up goals for Angelo Ogbonna and Diafra Sakho before Arthur Masuaku struck an outstanding third deep into injury time.
