Konta crashes out in Tokyo

- By EVE FODENS

World No 7 Johanna Konta crashed out of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in the second round when she lost 7-5, 7-6 (7/5) to Czech Barbora Strycova.

Konta, who had been given a bye in the first round, squandered a 3-0 lead in the first set and the British No 1 was also unable to convert two set points in the second in her first match since losing in the opening round at the US Open.

“I’m very emotional and very happy that I won against Johanna,” Strycova said. “She’s such a tough opponent to play, she doesn’t give you anything.”

Former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki recovered from a set down to defeat American Shelby Rogers and set up a quarter-final with Dominika Cibulkova.
