Smile and say cheese: Swiss farmers stock up for the winter months
Farmer’s name tags are placed on wheels of alpine cheese made during the summer months on the mountain pastures in the Justistal, near Sigriswil, above Lake Thun in Switzerland.
The cheese from the Justistal will be shared among the farmer families, according to the number of cows they own.
The traditional process called “Chaesteilet,” which uses the milk of more than 250 cows, has been carried out for more than 300 years.
The cows themselves belong to the farmers from the municipality of Sigriswil. At the end of the summer the cheese is divided up among the farmers.
