#GERMANYDECIDES

Early results last night projected a victory for Chancellor Angela Merkel in the German election. The far-right AFD were set to be in the German parliament for the first time since 1945. @AFP reported: “Germany’s SPD refuses new coalition with Merkel after vote drubbing.” @Markurban01 added: “That didn’t take long – it appears that Merkel will have to look for new coalition options. It could take a while!” @mattfrei mused: “Germany re-elects Merkel but is not immune to wave of right wing populism. CDU/SPD down. AFD 3rd party/86 seats. Anti immigration backlash.” @ot_ford: “More than one in eight #German voters chose the far right. #AFD is now the third-largest party.” @astrachanphoto joked: “Merkel brings it home — proving, if nothing else, that there’s something to the campaign slogan: ‘She’s not crazy!’”

#TAKETHEKNEE

Players from America’s National Football League teams, Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens, “took a knee” at Wembley stadium in London during the US national anthem in response to recent comments by President Donald Trump, who has said players should be fired for the act. @realdonaldtrump raged: “If NFL fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country, you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!” @Danwetzel pointed out: “Rough guess is about 25 players from Ravens and Jags are kneeling.” @Sathnam teased: “Donald Trump has managed the truly impossible. He has made British people interested in American football.” @pappy_1971 tweeted: “I am proud vet, I served to protect our nation and our rights. The right to peaceful protest is one. Please don’t forget.”

#CATALANREFERENDUM

Grassroots groups driving the Catalan independence movement distributed one million ballots at a rally in Barcelona for a vote the Madrid has called illegal. @lizcastro declared: “We just received ONE MILLION ballots at the historic building of the University of Barcelona.” @Nprweekend tweeted: “Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets in Barcelona to show support for a vote on Catalan independence.”
