Morrison’s revival aided by Crieff High link up

- By ALAN LORIMER

Morrison’s Academy, once a powerhouse in Midlands schools rugby before suffering a dip, has been making a revival over recent years and this season the Crieff school’s first fifteen have confirmed this new confidence by posting a five-from-five winning run in the Barbarian Conference.

The success this season, achieving wins over Ayr/ Wellington, Jordanhill School, St Columba’s, Carrick Academy and most recently Queen Victoria School, can, in part, be attributed to a forwardthinking link-up with another school in the town.

“We have three Crieff High School pupils playing regularly with the squad and it is working really well. We also have Crieff High School boys at under-15 and under-13 levels contributing well to those teams,” said Scott Weston, the director of rugby at Morrison’s.

In Edinburgh, George Watson’s College recorded a notable 29-10 win over Palmerston North Boys High School with tries by Cameron Scott, Blair Grant and Callum Hoffie (2). The touring New Zealand school also played their Development side against George Heriot’s resulting in a 33-25 win for the Goldenacre team, Heriot’s tries coming from No 8 Gregor Shand (2), flanker Euan Lister, prop Alex Tabatabaie and centre Hector Mackechnie.

Stewart’s Melville College defeated Royal Grammar School, Newcastle 34-28 with tries by Nathan Brown (2), Connor Boyle and Nathan Moffat (2).

At under-18 youth level, Highland ran out 20-16 winners against Hamilton while Stirling County continued their successful Shogun Conference campaign with a 49-14 win over Boroughmuir.

Boroughmuir, meanwhile, will shortly announce a hugely significant rugby programme that could have a profound influence on cultivating rugby at all ages within the Meggetland catchment area. Boroughmuir will launch this important initiative at Meggetland on Saturday.
