Mccart hopes games under Ross can lead to Celtic debut

- By LINDSAY HERRON

Jamie Mccart believes working for Jack Ross at St Mirren can help him become the latest Celtic kid to make it into Brendan Rodgers’ first team.

The 20-year-old defender – son of Celtic’s head of youth development and former Motherwell star Chris – is on a three-month loan with the Buddies and made an impressive debut in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Queen of the South.

He has seen team-mates Tony Ralston and Calvin Miller achieve the big breakthrough at Celtic and he wants to the be the next kid to make it.

Mccart said: “It’s always the dream to force my way into the Celtic first team. All I can focus on is working hard and now I am at St Mirren I just need to try and get in the team and stay in the team and hopefully get some wins.

“You look at Jozo Simunovic and Dedryck Boyata. The two of them are brilliant and are top professionals. They really take care of themselves.

“When you are there you learn from them. But coming to St Mirren, there are a lot of players I can learn from here as well. I just need to try and learn every day and see where it takes me.”

Mccart, who had a loan spell at Inverness last season, says he doesn’t get any special favours from his father, who won the Scottish Cup with Motherwell in 1991.

He said: “I don’t really work directly under my dad at Celtic. He kind of stays away from it and my under-20s team. But it is no issue for me because I am just there to work hard so I don’t really take notice.

“I jumped at the chance to go to St Mirren and work under the manager here.

“He has turned the club around and I am really excited about where this club is going.

“Working under Jack Ross is the main reason I have come here. St Mirren are a big club and they deserve to be in the top division. I heard only good things about the club and staff so I’m happy to be here.

“It is a great group of players and they were all very welcoming, the guys around me all helped me out.

“I’ve learned very quickly that this is a strong, unified team so I enjoyed it.”
