Glasgow council chief says sorry over Grenfell cladding concerns row

- By SCOTT MACNAB

The leader of Glasgow City Council has apologised over its handling of the Grenfell cladding row which emerged last week.

Susan Aitken, the Nationalist leader of Scotland’s biggest city admitted there had been a “miscommunication” on the part of the council over the 57 private properties which have the ACM cladding at the centre of the Grenfell blaze. The situation only emerged when city official Raymond Barlow gave evidence to MSPS last week.

Ms Aitken admitted: “It shouldn’t have happened, 0 Susan Aitken says there was a miscommunication I apologise on behalf of the council - mistakes were made, information came out in a way that shouldn’t have happened.”

The leader was criticised for going to ground leaving coun- cil officers to comment publicly on the row.

But Ms Aitken said yesterday: “The priority for me was to ensure that there was an action plan in place, that we had clear targets, in place.”

Sheadded:“clearlytherehas been a miscommunication within the council and that is something we are going to address.”

Residents in the buildings affected have not yet been informed, but Ms Aitken said this process will start on Friday and there is no “concerns” among council officials about the situation.

“There isn’t a Grenfell waiting to happen,” she added.
