Murray urges Hibs to break City’s league dominance

- By ALAN CAMPBELL

Hibernian captain Joelle Murray hopes her side can take their cup form into tonight’s rescheduled Scottish Building Society SWPL1 match against Glasgow City at the Excelsior Stadium (7:30pm KO).

The Edinburgh club last won the league in 2007, but since then their rivals have won ten in a row.

Nevertheless, Hibs have ended City’s previous stranglehold on the domestic competitions by winning the last two League Cups as well as last season’s SSE Scottish Women’s Cup.

“We always seem to get one over them in the cup competitions, but they turn the tables in the league,” central defender Murray confirmed. “The next step is to change that.”

Hibs are two points behind, but have a game in hand. The sides will meet one more time in the penultimate round of fixtures on 12 November with City having edged the first of the three games 2-1 in May.

Other than that Hibs have won every domestic game and Murray said: “It was disappointing to lose that one because both their goals were preventable. Other than that it has been a very good season so far.

“There have been early goals and very, very late goals in our recent matches against them so we need to be focused and on our game from the first minute to the last.”

Hibs will have almost a full squad to choose from with Rachel Mclauchlan celebrating her return from injury with a goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win at Stirling University.

City will be without Scotland under-19 internationalist Sam Kerr. The midfielder suffered an ankle injury in the 5-0 demolition of Spartans and will also miss the club’s Champions League trip to Kazakhstan next week.
