‘It is a privilege to spend so much time with him’

-

Jenny Ackland, 62, from Clydebank, looks after her four-year-old grandson, Callum, three days a week while his parents work. She gave up her full-time job as an NHS podiatrist when Callum was a baby.

She said: “He is at nursery now in the mornings – I often take him and I always pick him up.

“I’ve done it since my daughter went back to work and I will keep doing it when she has her second baby, which is due soon.

“I had three children myself and my mother and motherin-law were both on hand to help me out, which was lovely. Callum has the same – his grandma on the other side looks after him on the two days I’m at work as an allied health professional for Age Scotland.

“My children have such a lovely bond with their Nana, because they spent so much time with them and I wanted the same.

“I would be devastated if I didn’t get that opportunity – it is a privilege to spend so much time with him.

“Unlike parents, grandparents are less busy so we have time to just sit with his train set or a colouring book.”
