First collapse since 2009
Monarch is the first major UK airline collapse since Glasgow-based carrier Flyglobespan went into administration in 2009.
When that occurred, the CAA also stepped in to take responsibility for the repatriation of about 1,100 people who were on holidays booked as part of a Flyglobespan package holiday. However, a further 3,500 passengers who booked Flyglobespan flights directly would not get a refund on the cost of their flight and had to pay for a “reduced rate repatriation fare”.
A year earlier, Zoom, an England-based airline founded by Scots brothers Hugh and John Boyle, filed for bankruptcy.
