Jay walks it at Ayr

● All-the-way win part of double for jockey Haynes

- By GLENDALE

Course specialist Jay Kay won his fifth race at Ayr when landing the feature contest yesterday – the William Hill Proud To Support Scottish Sport Handicap.

Ridden by his regular pilot, Joey Haynes, the eight yearold gelding, sent off a 4-1 shot, made all to win by a length and three quarter lengths from Clef with the well-backed favourite Royal Regent third.

It was Jay Kay’s first win since August 2015 when he won on Ladies Night at Ayr and he was rewarded with a healthy first prize of more than £9,000.

The win gave Haynes a double as he was successful in the opening nursery handicap on Burn Some Dust (7-1) for trainer Brian Ellison. Another double-winning jockey was apprentice Callum Rodriguez who steered Question of Faith, the 5-6 favourite, to a comfortable win in the longest race on the card, the one mile seven furlong handicap, and then scored on Mustaqbal in Division One of the mile apprentice handicap.

Meanwhile, Musselburgh is to stage an extra meeting on Monday.

The British Horseracing Authority announced the fixture as a result of recent abandonments at Ayr and Hamilton. A six-race card has been scheduled, which could become seven if a division is needed, and will be run as a twilight fixture.
