Leonard vows Labour will fight Trump visit

- By PARIS GOURTSOYANNIS

Labour leadership candidate Richard Leonard has pledged to lead protests against Donald Trump if the US president comes to Scotland as part of a planned state visit.

It comes as reports suggest Mr Trump will a scaled-back “working visit” to the UK early next year without meeting the Queen or attending a state banquet.

Downing Street did not comment on the reports, saying the state visit would go ahead but no dates had been discussed. Mr Trump had been expected to spend time in Scotland during a state visit and meet the Queen at her Balmoral summer residence, in order to minimise potential protests.

Mr Leonard said Scottish Labour would be “at the forefront of opposing a state visit” if he wins the party leadership.
