Rooney rides to Everton’s rescue with late penalty

- By COLIN STEWART

Ronald Koeman was grateful for a late Wayne Rooney penalty as Everton snatched a 1-1 draw at Brighton yesterday.

The struggling Toffees were staring at another defeat when Anthony Knockaert fired Brighton ahead eight minutes from time. But Seagulls captain Bruno was penalised for fouling Dominic Calvertlewin with two minutes remaining and Rooney tucked home the equaliser.

The goal is unlikely to lift the pressure on Koeman, whose out-of-sorts side are still without an away win since January.

Nevertheless the Dutchman felt it was a performance Everton can build on as they bid to kick-start their stuttering season.

“I think we deserved something out of the afternoon,” he said.

“We know we can play better but the commitment and belief was really positive. At least it’s one point.”

Manolo Gabbiadini scored a brace at St Mary’s as Southampton twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United.

The Italian forward cancelled out Isaac Hayden’s strike, before levelling from the spot after Ayoze Perez had given Newcastle the lead once more. The penalty had been awarded when Florian Lejeune fouled Shane Long in the area 15 minutes from time.

“I am not happy with the two goals we conceded but overall it was a good performance and a great game to watch for everyone,” said Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez.

In the Championship, meanwhile, Derby County beat local rivals Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Pride Park, with Czech striker Matej Vydra scoring the opener in the first minute and setting up the clincher for David Nugent five minutes after half-time.

The closest Forest came to scoring was when former Rangers player Barrie Mckay struck the post. Ex-hibs forward Jason Cummings also missed from close range just before Nugent’s goal.
